Spend the evening exploring Thimphu town at leisure, wandering through its colorful markets and mingling with the locals. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Day 2
After breakfast, drive to the base of Tango Monastery and hike for about an hour to reach the hilltop retreat. Surrounded by pine forests, the monastery provides spiritual calm and sweeping valley views. Returning to town for lunch, continue to Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) to admire one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Afterwards, visit the Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s unusual national animal, explore the vibrant Weekend Market, and end the day by observing traditional archery at the local grounds. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Day 3
Travel east toward Punakha on a three-hour drive. En route, stop at Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens crown the ridge and the snowcapped Himalayas rise above the clouds. Continue to Lobesa and enjoy a gentle hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple associated with the “Divine Madman,” Drukpa Kunley. In Punakha, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, spectacularly located between two rivers and renowned for its architecture and historical importance. Overnight stay in Punakha.
Day 4
The drive from Punakha to Trongsa winds through forests, valleys, and mountain ridges before arriving in the heart of central Bhutan. Begin your exploration at Trongsa Dzong, Bhutan’s largest fortress, dramatically perched on a ridge overlooking the valley. Once the seat of power for the Wangchuck dynasty, it remains one of the most significant fortresses in Bhutanese history. Continue to Ta Dzong, a watchtower turned museum, which offers fascinating exhibits about the monarchy and Bhutan’s political heritage. Overnight stay in Trongsa.
Day 5
The journey continues into Bumthang, often called the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Cross Yotong La Pass before descending into the valley. Begin with Jambay Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, one of the oldest in Bhutan. Continue to Kurje Lhakhang, where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left his body imprint, making it a revered pilgrimage site. End the day at Tamshing Lhakhang, founded by Pema Lingpa in the 16th century, known for its sacred murals and spiritual treasures. Overnight stay in Bumthang.
Day 6
Today, venture into the remote Tang Valley, dotted with peaceful villages, meadows, and forested slopes. On arrival, take a gentle hike to Ogyen Choling Palace, once the residence of a noble family and now preserved as a cultural museum. Its collection of manuscripts, artifacts, and rural exhibits offers insight into Bhutan’s past way of life and feudal heritage. The quiet beauty of the valley enhances the experience, giving you a glimpse into Bhutan’s timeless traditions. Return to Bumthang in the evening. Overnight stay in Bumthang.
Day 7
Depart Bumthang and drive west to the stunning glacial valley of Phobjikha, renowned for its sweeping landscapes and winter visitors, the endangered black-necked cranes. Upon arrival, visit Gangtey Monastery, a 17th-century Nyingma seat perched on a ridge overlooking the valley. Later, take a leisurely walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, winding through pine forests, meadows, and traditional villages, before stopping at the Crane Information Center to learn about conservation efforts for these sacred birds. Overnight stay in Phobjikha.
Day 8
Enjoy a scenic return drive to Paro, retracing your route through Dochula Pass, where you can pause to admire the 108 memorial chortens and Himalayan panoramas. Along the way, visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan, built in 1629 and now functioning as a center for Buddhist studies. Arriving in Paro by evening, you may relax at your hotel or wander through the town, browsing its handicraft shops and traditional markets. Overnight stay in Paro.
Day 9
Rise early for the iconic hike to Taktsang Monastery, the legendary Tiger’s Nest. The trail ascends through forests of pine and prayer flags, leading to the breathtaking monastery that clings dramatically to a cliffside 900 meters above the Paro Valley. This sacred site is where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century, making it one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Bhutan. Pause for lunch at the cafeteria midway, offering spectacular views of the monastery. After your descent, spend the afternoon at leisure, perhaps exploring Paro town or indulging in a traditional hot stone bath to soothe your muscles. Overnight stay in Paro.
