Thimphu, Paro and Punakha Tour Overview

This 7-day Bhutan journey takes you from the lush plains of India to the breathtaking valleys of the Land of the Thunder Dragon, blending stunning landscapes, sacred monasteries, and rich cultural heritage. Beginning in Phuentsholing, the gateway to Bhutan, you’ll ascend into the serene capital of Thimphu, where tradition and modern life coexist in perfect harmony. Travel over mountain passes adorned with chortens, explore legendary sites such as the Fertility Temple and the magnificent Punakha Dzong, and uncover centuries of history in the valleys of Paro. The spiritual climax comes with the hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched dramatically on a cliffside, before concluding with a gentle descent back to the border. Along the way, you’ll encounter welcoming locals, breathtaking Himalayan vistas, and the timeless charm of Bhutanese culture.

Thimphu, Paro and Punakha Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Upon arrival at Bagdogra Airport, meet your driver and begin the journey to Phuentsholing, Bhutan’s gateway town on the southern border. If you arrive early, complete the immigration formalities and continue driving towards Thimphu. Along the way, stop to admire Dam View, take in the beauty of cascading waterfalls, and visit Chuzom, the scenic confluence where the Paro and Thimphu rivers meet, guarded by three chortens in Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepali styles.
Day 2
Begin the day at the Memorial Chorten, a revered stupa built in honor of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Marvel at the towering Buddha Dordenma, a 51-meter statue overlooking the valley and housing thousands of smaller Buddha images. Visit Simply Bhutan, a living museum that offers a glimpse into traditional life, then head to the Takin Preserve to meet Bhutan’s rare national animal. End your day browsing the lively Centenary Farmers’ Market, where locals trade fresh produce and handcrafted goods.
Day 3
Travel to Punakha with a stop at Dochula Pass (3,100m), adorned with 108 memorial chortens and offering panoramic Himalayan views on a clear day. Continue to Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple dedicated to the legendary “Divine Madman” Drukpa Kunley. In Punakha, explore the stunning Punakha Dzong, considered one of Bhutan’s most beautiful fortresses, and take a walk across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in the country.
Day 4
Return to Paro, passing once more through Thimphu. Upon arrival, visit the National Museum, originally a watchtower now housing Bhutan’s finest cultural treasures, and Paro Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress that serves as the center of both administration and monastic life in the valley.
Day 5
Embark on a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), dramatically perched on a cliffside 900 meters above the valley floor. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated, making it one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan. After the hike, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the kingdom, built in the 7th century and marking the arrival of Buddhism in Bhutan.
Day 6
Journey back to Phuentsholing, stopping at Kharbandi Gompa if time permits. This peaceful hilltop monastery offers sweeping views over the Indian plains. Later, take a stroll through Phuentsholing Town and visit Zangto Pelri Lhakhang, a charming temple representing Guru Rinpoche’s heavenly paradise.
Day 7
After breakfast, complete your exit immigration formalities and travel back to Bagdogra Airport with your Indian driver for your onward flight, carrying with you cherished memories of Bhutan’s beauty, culture, and spiritual warmth.
