Thimphu, Paro and Wangdue Phodrang Tour Overview

Bhutan is more than a destination — it’s a living storybook where ancient traditions breathe through misty valleys and every fortress-monastery tells a tale of spirituality and resilience. From the moment your flight dips between towering Himalayan peaks into Paro Valley, you will feel the serene magic of the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Over the next eight days, wander through vibrant markets and tranquil monasteries, cross cloud-kissed mountain passes draped in prayer flags, and explore dzongs that have stood as guardians of Bhutan’s culture for centuries.
This journey is crafted for travelers seeking more than sightseeing — it is an immersion into Bhutan’s culture, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes, from the regal streets of Thimphu to the riverside grandeur of Punakha Dzong, the mystical stillness of Phobjikha Valley, and the cliffside wonder of Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).

Thimphu, Paro and Wangdue Phodrang Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Drive: 1 hr • Paro Altitude: 2,300 m • Thimphu Altitude: 2,320 m
Your journey begins with one of the world’s most spectacular flights, gliding past snow-capped Himalayan giants before touching down in Paro. After a warm welcome, drive to Bhutan’s charming capital, Thimphu, following the glistening Pa Chhu River.
Tamchog Lhakhang & Iron Bridge: Built by the 15th-century Tibetan lama and engineer Thangtong Gyalpo, this temple and iron chain suspension bridge are remarkable feats of medieval engineering, symbolizing Bhutan’s spiritual heritage and historical ingenuity.
In the evening, enjoy a stroll through Thimphu’s main street, where traditional Bhutanese architecture blends seamlessly with modern vibrancy — reflecting Bhutan’s careful balance of preservation and progress.
Day 2
Wake up to the fresh mountain air and begin at the School of Arts & Crafts (Zorig Chusum), founded to preserve Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts, from thangka painting to wood carving — essential expressions of Bhutanese cultural and religious identity.
Explore the Weekend Market, a vibrant hub showcasing agricultural produce, local handicrafts, and a snapshot of rural Bhutanese life.
In the afternoon, hike to Dodedrak Buddhist Monastery, a serene retreat nestled in the mountains, offering insight into contemporary monastic life amid peaceful scenery.
Day 3
Drive: 3 hrs • Dochula Pass Altitude: 3,100 m • Punakha Altitude: 1,200 m
Cross the dramatic Dochula Pass, adorned with 108 chortens built to honor Bhutanese soldiers. From here, enjoy panoramic views of Himalayan peaks, including Masagang and Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest unclimbed mountain.
In Punakha, visit Chimi Lhakhang, built by the legendary saint Drukpa Kunley, known as the Divine Madman. The temple features phallic paintings and is a site for fertility blessings, reflecting Bhutan’s unique blend of spirituality and folk traditions.
End the day at Punakha Dzong, constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. This architectural masterpiece sits at the confluence of two rivers and has served as Bhutan’s administrative and spiritual heart for centuries.
Day 4
Drive: 4 hrs • Altitude: 3,000 m
Journey to the tranquil Phobjikha Valley, a glacial valley and winter home to endangered black-necked cranes, revered as symbols of longevity and good fortune.
Visit Gangtey Monastery, a major seat of the Nyingma school of Buddhism, founded in 1613. Perched atop a ridge, the monastery offers stunning views and embodies traditional dzong architecture.
Take a walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, passing forests and villages that reveal the valley’s ecological and cultural richness.
